Incorporated in 1776, Carthage is the county seat, and its central location makes it convenient to all areas of the county. It is home to the annual Buggy Festival held each May, which commemorates the Tyson and Jones Buggy Company and Carthage’s buggy manufacturing heritage during the mid-1800s to 1920s. 2018 marked the Festival’s 30th year.
Carthage is also home to the Carthage Historical Museum displaying 200 years of local history, and several historic sites are nearby including the 1760 McClendon Cabin, Moore County’s oldest structure still standing in its original location. The Bryant House, built in 1820, is also on the McClendon property.
The Town of Vass has its roots as a commerce, agriculture and railroad center and was incorporated in 1907. The Pilot, Moore County’s local newspaper, was first published in 1921 in Vass by Mr. Stacy Brewer who established the Pilot Printing Company.
Located northeast of Pinehurst along U.S. Highway 1, the Town is convenient to the western border of the Fort Bragg Army Reservation. It is a great place to live and enjoy the warmth, hospitality and charm of small town living.
The Town of Cameron was once known as the “Dewberry Capital of the World” because of the large-scale cultivation of dewberries in this farming community. Today Cameron is the antiques capital of the Sandhills with a variety of antique stores along the main road through town, Carthage Street. The antiques experience here has been featured in Southern Living magazine and voted “Best Antique Shopping” by the readers of Our State magazine.
Two antique festivals are held annually, one on the first Saturday in May and the other on the first Saturday in October, attracting hundreds of antique dealers and thousands of antique lovers.
A picturesque residential community, Cameron retains its turn-of-the-century appeal.
